Mission Hills, CA, May 5, 2007 - The Gavar Special School for handicapped children, located in the Gegharkunik Region of Armenia will be made safer and warmer this summer when it receives a new roof, thanks in large part to the efforts of Focus on Children Now, Inc. The newly formed charitable organization based in Southern California established to take action of the pressing problems facing Armenian youth, had focused its attentions on the residential school which educates mentally and physically handicapped children of the Gegharkunik Region, surrounding Lake Sevan. The only school of its kind in the region, Gavar Special School has over 90 students, 40 of which are residential boarding students during the school year.

For it's inaugural event, Focus on Children Now organized a Dinner Gala on May 5 at the Ararat Home of Mission Hills. In attendance were over 300 members of the greater Armenian community and special guests. Keynote speakers were Jason and Terra Sprague, US Peace Corps Volunteers working in Gavar who have taken Gavar Special School as one of their ongoing volunteer projects. A silent auction of various artworks from Armenia and Armenian artists provided an additional interesting way to help the cause.

All proceeds from the event have gone to the roof replacement project of Gavar Special School. Capital improvements to the 31 year old building, ensuring the safety and warmth of the students, has been priority for the school, which is situated in one of the coldest regions of the country. More information can be found on the school's website GavarSpecialSchool.org.

In addition to the Dinner Dance, Focus on Children Now, Inc. is serving the poor and disadvantaged population in Armenia by means of an ongoing clothing drive. Gently used clothing items of all sizes, toys excluding stuff items, as well as new shoes are being collected and shipped to reliable organizations on a regular basis. For more information on this project, please contact FCN at 818.554.8832 or by visiting the website focusonchildrennow.org.

Focus on Children Now, Inc. is planning their second annual Gala Dinner/Dance for 2008. In the meantime, you can track their work and progress for the youth of Armenia by frequently visiting their website focusonchildrennow.org or fcnorg.com.
