Los Angeles, April 2009 – On Saturday, March 21, 2009, Los Angeles and Armenian community members came together at the Focus on Children Now's (FCN) annual gala to celebrate and benefit the Children's Nutrition Program. This significant night took place at the grand setting of Ararat Home Deukmejian Ballroom.
The event allowed for friends of FCN to learn about and celebrate FCN's impact it has made in thousands of children's lives. The program for this special night included keynote speaker Professor Gourgen Melikyan, Dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Yerevan State University and 1997 Nobel Prize laureate. A silent auction including art works from local and international Armenian artists and crafts from the students who have been the beneficiaries of FCN was active throughout the evening. The night concluded with announcing the raffle's winner, who was the recipient of two airline tickets to Europe, including Armenia.
In Mr. Melikyan's remarks, he expressed his gratitude to FCN and its many supporters. He also shared the difference that FCN's Children's Nutrition Program has made in the lives of children. "It is because of the program that hundreds of children have sufficient nutrition daily. Teachers are seeing the difference in the children’s learning capability, in addition to improvement in students' attendance, increased attentiveness and overall achievement due to the nutrition they are receiving daily," said Mr. Melikyan as he acknowledged the influence that FCN has made.
"When a child goes to bed hungry, does it matter whose child it is?" asked Robert Amirian, FCN co-founder and executive board member, as he spoke about FCN's mission and future plans. "Every penny, every piece of clothing, every bit of your effort that comes to Focus on Children Now, 100% of it goes to Children” reminded Mr. Amirian. "In this very short period of two years, we have delivered humanitarian aid packages to over 40,000 children and their families," stated Mr. Amirian as he thanked FCN supporters and reminded them that FCN’s work would not be possible without the generous donations of volunteers and donors.
"This was a night of celebration and appreciation. We celebrated the achievements of FCN and the success of our newly launched Children's Nutrition Program. This night was also to appreciate the goodness of everyone who has and continues to give their time and resources to bring basic necessities of life to impoverished children," said Kariné Aboolian, co-founder and president of FCN.
As a young charity, FCN has had tremendous success helping over 40,000 children and their families by distributing donated clothing, shoes, school supplies, toys and medical supplies, allowing the beneficiating children to feel more confident about entering society and shrugging off the stigma of poverty. FCN's Children's Nutrition Program compliments the Humanitarian Aid Program as it focuses on communities that need help by providing daily nutrition during the school days.
This event raised funds and awareness for children around the world who are in need of life's basic necessities.
