Children's Nutrition Program
View Video | View GallerySince its incorporation as a not for profit organization in 2007, Focus on Children Now (FCN), in the local community and among its supporters, has become synonymous with foresight, anticipation, and efficaciousness. The foresight is attributed to its leadership who frequently visit Armenia to study the immediate and anticipating needs of economically disadvantaged children, assess the most pressing issues, and look for viable solutions that can be implemented efficaciously within the confines of the organization’s resources.
In 2008, FCN identified a dire need for such children, and since January 2009 has embarked on a new project under the umbrella of “Children’s Nutrition Program.” As anticipated, the program is having a significantly positive impact in the lives of the children that are part of the program.
The primary objective of the program is to provide nutritional nourishment to children at schools as part of their daily diet. Currently FCN provides daily nourishment to all the students in the town of Berdzor in Kashatagh region of Karabagh.
Kashatagh is home to over 18,000 immigrants. The lack of basic infrastructure, transportation, employment, and food supply has strained the population to brink of starvation. Children’s frail appearance is a testament to the dire needs in the region. Later, as resources increase, FCN has plans to expand the program to the other schools with similar needs in Armenia and Karabagh.
Within one month of program implementation, the Berdzor school and county education officials reported a 20% increase in attendance; this means about 70 more students are attending school, just because they know there is a glass of milk and snack waiting for them at the school. Often the nutrition provided by FCN is the main daily meal these students are having. After a few months of implementing the program, the schools officials’ reports indicate that in addition to attendance, the students have excelled in academics and are overall more active and happier while attending school.
