GSS Roof Restoration
Focus on Children Now Completes Gavar Special School Roof Replacement ProjectFocus on Children Now successfully completed the replacement of Gavar Special School's 31-year-old roof. Gavar Special School, a boarding school for special needs children, serves over 100 children in the Gegharkunik region of Armenia. Like most schools, especially those in the much-neglected sector of special education, it had no funds for capital improvement.
The Gavar Special School roof project was selected as a beneficiary by FCN because the project will make a large impact on a significant number of children with long-term benefits. Additionally, Gavar Special School is working to improve itself so it may increase its student population. At this time, there are estimated 700 special needs children in the Gegharkunik region with only 10 percent receiving any education. The replaced roof is the first step to make usable, once again, portions of the building that are currently unsafe, expanding the functionality of the building to accommodate more special needs students.
The roof replacement was a large project with an estimated cost of $85,000. The project involved the removal and replacement of all the sheeting and gutters of 30,000 square foot roof. In addition all the existing timber support structure was reconditioned, replaced and/or improved to withstand the extreme weather common during Gavar's long winters.
The benefits of this project are numerous. Primarily, fixing Gavar Special School's roof will allow other projects at the school to go forward. Gavar Special School's Strategic Improvement Plan identified the roof replacement as its number one priority, and most significant step to ensuring a safe learning environment.
Employing FCN's trusted network of friends in Armenia, the NGO worked directly with the Ministry of Education to carry out the project. All donated funds for the Gavar Special School's Roof Project went directly to the project costs and there were no indirect project costs incurred.
We hope you will consider supporting FCN as we strive to improve the future of some of the world's most vulnerable children. FCN believes by completing this project, a sustainable and long-term improvement process at Gavar Special School can continue which will benefit hundreds of children in the years to come.
